The Trouble With These Three Letters: Why I’m not abandoning “DEI,” even when I’m tempted to
The term “DEI” carries more weight than ever—and not all of it good. I’ve wrestled with whether to walk away from the label altogether. Here’s why I’m staying—and how I’m reclaiming the work beyond the acronym.
Why I Created This is DEI
In a time when DEI is both politicized and misunderstood, This is DEI was created to cut through the noise. This platform is based on decades of work primarily rooted in racial justice and antiracism, aiming to share honest, informed perspectives that empower readers to break away from the misconceptions and focus on what DEI truly means in our workplaces, communities, and beyond.
A lot has changed in DEI between 2024 and 2025: new laws, new restrictions, and a noticeable corporate retreat. But the lived reality inside workplaces and campuses is the same. People still want fairness, safety, and belonging—even when the acronym becomes too risky to say out loud.
